Objective: Design classroom culture for Pre-K students from low-income families.
Coming into my Pre-K classroom as a Teach For America corps member, I strategically designed an entire classroom culture around “Half Moon Bay Superstars.” A classroom investment board encouaged students to understand how we would “travel” in a classroom spaceship through monthly themed units before we make it to “Kinderland” by the end of the year. A behavior tracking system allowed students to be recognize for positive behavior when their names moved to the “Above and Beyond” green star. A signature classroom cheer “Half Moon Bay…Superstars!” during circle time emphasized classroom identity and teamwork. Investment of a classroom culture was one of many factors that helped contribute to a 54% increase in measured student achievement.
