My Three Goals

(1/3) My first goal is to promote themes of #diversityandinclusion. The title “You’re Invited!” is a protest to the way our current administration has largely mishandled our immigration policies. The characters in my story are diverse in color and shape, and they all come together to celebrate at this magical party. . Aside from the book itself, I also recognize the lack of diversity in the publishing industry. Publisher and diversity advocate @leeandlow stated “Diversity remains an ever-evolving topic in publishing when it comes to books as well as the diversity among the authors and illustrators creating them.” (May 2018, blog) Since female and minority authors are hardly recognized, I thought it would be important to share that “Hello and yes! I am an Asian American female, and I have a children’s book project to share that I wrote and illustrated.” ✌️ . Coming to Kickstarter this summer. Follow me at @angelhalochang to stay tuned! (2/3) My second goal is to support the idea that children’s books can be a powerful medium in shaping our modern culture. Green eggs and ham has become an acceptable breakfast treat for kids thanks to Dr. Seuss. Winnie the Pooh was a children’s book character by author A. A. Milne before Disney had us fall in love with a pantsless teddy bear. A Roald Dahl book imagined what it’d be like to visit a chocolate factory and coined the term “Oompa Loompa” years before it became a popular song. (Also something very similar about these three authors…) So it’s my hope that my new book can help add to the #diversityandinclusion conversation. . Still children’s books are not nearly as regarded as tv, music, and movies. The path to publishing and making it onto bookshelves has been stubbornly exclusive. According to three decades of data from the Cooperative Children’s Book Center, creators of color are still heavily underrepresented. Which is why I’m enjoying the self-publishing route and the creative freedom to launch my new book project this summer on Kickstarter. . Follow me at @angelhalochang to stay tuned! (3/3) My third goal is to celebrate #creativity, and here’s a little poem I wrote. . Each one of us is different in our unique ways, which we should not put down but received with praise. Each one of us a color and each one of us a shade. Different colors inside out and beautifully made. Unless you don’t want to join this masterpiece called life, and instead you want to fill the void with bitterness and strife. Then boo on you crayon, if you can’t play your part. What’s a color to do if it won’t contribute art! Because if love were a color it would be filled with many, so hate is the opposite and the absence of any. Let’s add to this wonderful world our creativity, and paint it all over with such diversity. ✨ . New children’s book coming to Kickstarter this summer. Follow me at @angelhalochang to stay tuned!
